SHADOWCLAN - 35 MOONS - WARRIOR - MALE - HETEROSEXUAL
PERSONALITY
The easiest way to describe Graystorm is 'bipolar'. No, he doesn't have psychological disorder, but he's bipolar in the colloquial sense—that is to say, he oscillates between extremes. His personality contradicts itself so strongly that it seems inadequate to describe him as moody.
Perhaps it's trite to say that all ShadowClan cats have a dark side, but it seems to be true. Scrounging for frogs and snakes will do that to a cat, or at least it did in Graystorm's case. He can be surly and savage—a real brute, at times. When he's angry, you'll know. He's the first to voice his opinion and isn't afraid to back it up with claws, even at a simple clan meeting. He's also a notorious pessimist who can rumble for hours about how ShadowClan is doomed, how the other clans are destroying the forest with their stupidity, or even simply how horrible the weather is.
He isn't, however, all temper and dismay. In fact, when he isn't quarreling with his clanmates, he can be quite warm. He's got a fairly good sense of humor. It's a sarcastic sense of humor, no doubt, but he loves to tease his friends, and he appreciates a good joke more than most cats. He also fancies himself a ladies' man and is quite the flirt. It can be a bit patronizing at times, but he loves to flatter and charm the she-cats. Not that he's particularly successful in his endeavors. For all his flirtatious effort, there are only a handful of she-cats who can tolerate being around him. He's managed to rack up a total of zero mates in his entire life, and that doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon.
Now, which Graystorm decides to show up—surly or schmoozy—depends on the circumstances. What cats are around, what the conversation is about, and how well he slept the night before all affect the way he acts. His mood can change as quickly as the weather. He is, after all, Graystorm.
HISTORY
Graystorm's life hasn't been an easy one. His parents, Graywhisker and Fogflower, were older when they mated, and his mother regretted having to leave behind the life of a warrior for the nursery. To make Fogflower's pregnancy even rougher, Graywhisker died from an infected rat bite two weeks before the kittens came. Fogflower was still very much in mourning when her kits were born, and every cat pitied her when they heard the names of her kits. Graykit, the youngest, was named after his father, for he was the spitting image of the deceased gray tabby. Stonekit, the other male kitten, was named after Stonefoot, the medicine cat who had tried desperately to save Graywhisker's lfie. Finally, the only female had been named Dawnkit, because Fogflower hoped the kits would bring a new light to her life.
Whatever Fogflower's hopes were for her family, they didn't last long. Fogflower was a distant, removed mother, and once they became apprentices, none of the kits remained close to her. The trio weren't even particularly close to each other. In fact, Graypaw and Stonepaw spent their entire apprenticeship competing for the affection of Mudpaw, a rowdy she-cat who had half the clan wrapped around her tail. When Stonepaw earned his warrior name, Stonestripe, first and earned Mudpaw's love, Graypaw could never forgive him. He had other crushes, of course, but there was something about losing to his brother that he could never quite recover from.
Graystorm did, eventually, earn his warrior name. In fact, he became Graystorm at the same time that his sister became Dawnflight. The two of them took their vigil together, and somehow sitting in silence brought them closer. In fact, Graystorm would almost have considered Dawnflight his friend, if she hadn't been so close to Mudpaw.
Graystorm had a few moons of normality before disaster struck again. Heronstar had made a few enemies amongst the WindClan warriors, and no one was surprised when a squabble between the clans broke out. Fogflower, always willing to unsheath her claws, had gotten herself involved in a brutal fight. She died from her wounds, leaving her three full-grown kits without parents.
Moons later, Maplestar took Heronstar's place. The clan was more peaceful, but there was another threat on the horizon: disease. Rats carried illness into ShadowClan, and every cat was at risk. Willowface, a she-cat Graystorm was wooing, was one of the first to get sick. Totally smitten, Graystorm refused to leave her side, even when the disease took a turn for the worse. Willowface died, and to no one's surprise, Graystorm got sick soon after. Graystorm spent more than half a moon fighting the disease and was on the edge of death before his fever finally broke. Recovery after such an illness is slow and uncertain. Graystorm only just recently moved back into the warriors' den, and he has yet to regain his full strenght, even now.
